The essence of the air suspension system is to select the elasticity of the air spring, the damping force of the shock absorber and the height of the body to meet the requirements of safety and comfort.
1. Measurement of Several Data on Vehicle Body Height
The specified height of each axis is stored in the control unit. Firstly, measure several data related to the height of the vehicle body. Height x: refers to the distance from the center of the wheel to the lower edge of the fender, in millimeters (mm). Dimension A: refers to the diameter of the wheel accessory. Dimension B: refers to the distance from the upper edge of the unicycle to the lower edge of the middle fender.

Then calculate the body height according to the formula x=a/2 b. The standard body height values for Audi are 386mm for the front axle and 384mm for the rear axle (there may be differences between vehicle models). After removing and installing the suspension control unit J197, Audi must recode the adjustable air suspension system and match the default position of the body height.
2. Setting method for suspension working mode
Take Audi as an example. Firstly, press the "CAR" button on the control panel to bring up the adjustable air suspension system menu on the MMl display screen. Then, turn the joystick and press the button to set the desired suspension mode. The current mode is highlighted in white. When the suspension is raised or lowered, the adjustment direction is indicated by the white up arrow or down arrow. Due to faults or system limitations, the selected mode is not allowed to be displayed in gray.
(1) Automatic mode (normal height).
The characteristics of the shock absorber will be adjusted to the optimal state of the vehicle. When the vehicle speed exceeds 120km/h (on the highway), the vehicle height will automatically decrease by 15mm within 30 seconds; When the vehicle speed is below 70km/h, the vehicle height will automatically increase after 2 minutes, or immediately decrease when the vehicle speed is below 35 km/h.
(2) Comfort mode (normal height).
The characteristics of the shock absorber will be adjusted to a comfortable state, and the function of lowering the body height on highways will not be performed.
(3) Dynamic mode.
The height of the car body is 15mm lower than the normal height. The shock absorber is automatically adjusted to the sports configuration. There is no function to lower the height of the car body on the expressway.
(4) Field mode (also known as "mode").
When the car is driving on rough roads (such as field roads), you can choose field mode.
(5) High mode (also known as "lift mode").
3. Air spring deflation and inflation
The air spring must be deflated and inflated when the vehicle is stationary, and there shall be no fault information in the fault memory. The specific operation method is as follows: Connect the dedicated diagnostic instrument, enter the air suspension system, select the 04 function "Basic Settings", and then enter the following display group 1- Display group 20: Bleed the accumulator; Display group 21: Front axle deflation; Display group 22: Rear wheel axle deflation; Display group 23: Accumulator inflation (maximum pressure 1.6 MPa); Display group 24: front axle air spring inflation; Display group 25: rear axle air spring is inflated. Note: The air spring deflation operation will lower the body.
4. Enable and disable lift mode
The lifting mode is also known as the "loading mode" because it is used to load cars onto trains, ships, trucks, airplanes, and other transportation vehicles. After setting this mode, it is prohibited to adjust the body height. Specific operation method: Connect the diagnostic instrument such as V.A.G5051, enter control unit J197, select guided fault inquiry in self diagnosis, enter the address code of air suspension system 34, select function 16, enter enable authorization, and then use the keyboard to input the code to enable or cancel lifting mode.
5. Interpretation of Air Suspension Indicator Light Display
Audi has installed air suspension indicator lights on the dashboard, displaying the following meanings:
(1) Yellow indicator light - indicates a system malfunction. At this point, a diagnostic instrument should be connected to read the fault information. (2) Flashing yellow indicator light - indicates whether the vehicle height is too high or too low. (3) Low position green indicator light is on - it means that the body is lower than the normal height. (4) The low green indicator light flashes and the yellow indicator light illuminates, indicating that the body height is extremely low (which may occur during
Many control units in cars are related to air spring suspension control unit J197, such as J104-ESP control unit, J220 engine control unit, J533 gateway, J527 steering column control unit, J431 headlamp control unit, J285 instrument panel control unit, J345 trailer identification control unit
Therefore, if the air spring suspension system does not work properly, the above control unit may be faulty.
